This magnificent species conjures images of the Old South. Needing very little care in the garden, this tree is so sturdy it can handle hurricane winds, salt sprays and withering heat. A very long-lived tree, it actually grows at a moderate rate.

Typical oak flowers with sexes separate. Acorns produced in the fall. 3/4 to 1" long nuts, dark brown to black, 1/3 of which is covered by an ellipsoidal cup. Narrow, glossy leaves are evergreen.

Full sun.
Average garden soil.
Owls, warblers, wrens, turkey and a variety of other birds are attracted to this tree for both food and shelter. Also host plant for the White m Hairstreak butterfly.
Found in the Coastal Plain.
