SWAMP REDBAY
Persea borbonia var. palustris

 

Although the common name suggests this small evergreen tree should be planted in a swamp, it is well adapted to drier soils of most gardens. The leaves may be harvested and used fresh or dried as a seasoning in place of the traditional bay leaves found on supermarket shelves.

 

Family: Lauraceae

 

Description: Panicles of yellow-green flowers appear May - June. Blackish blue fruits available early fall. Oblong, glossy, fragrant leaves are evergreen.

 

Size: 20-30' (40') x 15-20'

Light: Full to part sun.

 

Planting and Care: Moist, acidic, well-drained soils.

Landscape Usage:

 

Wildlife Benefits: Attracts a variety of birds including fish crows, turkey and quail. Host plant for Palamedes Swallowtail and Spicebush Swallowtail. Good protective cover and nesting habitat for birds and squirrels.

 

Native Habitat: Found in coastal woods and dunes.
