Although the common name suggests this small evergreen tree should be planted in a swamp, it is well adapted to drier soils of most gardens. The leaves may be harvested and used fresh or dried as a seasoning in place of the traditional bay leaves found on supermarket shelves.

Panicles of yellow-green flowers appear May - June. Blackish blue fruits available early fall. Oblong, glossy, fragrant leaves are evergreen.

Full to part sun.
Moist, acidic, well-drained soils.
Attracts a variety of birds including fish crows, turkey and quail. Host plant for Palamedes Swallowtail and Spicebush Swallowtail. Good protective cover and nesting habitat for birds and squirrels.
Found in coastal woods and dunes.
