Swamp Mallow
Hibiscus coccineus


The scarlet or swamp mallow entices the ruby-throated hummingbird with its intense color. However, it is the bee which successfully polinates the flower. Swamp Mallow performs admirably in average garden soil. Growing along a pond margin with Asclepias incarnata and Lobelia cardinalis, it is a knockout.

 

Family: Malvaceae

 

Description: 8", flat, red flowers appear summer to early fall. Hard, tan capsules contain 1", fuzzy seeds. Deeply lobed leaves are dormant throughout the winter.

Planting and Care: Moist, sandy soils to average goarden soil.
