Protecting Georgia's Natural Resources For Future Generations

Partner in Conservation

Are you concerned about runaway development in Georgia, water and air pollution and the loss of wildlife habitat? If so, take action: Join the Georgia Wildlife Federation!

Since 1936, GWF has been leading efforts to protect Georgia’s wildlife, land, water and air. GWF is Georgia’s oldest and largest member-supported conservation organization and the state affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation. Through advocacy and education, we encourage the intelligent management of Georgia’s natural resources. GWF is the statewide conservation organization that gets results!

Take Action! Make Progress!

For over 65 years, GWF has been dedicated to the preservation of Georgia’s wildlife and wild places. We spearheaded the campaign to save the Alcovy River, fought to stop mining in the Okefenokee Swamp, helped to establish a conservation plan for the red-cockaded woodpecker... and our work continues.

Today we are fighting for National Forest protection, leading the battle to protect Georgia’s water as a public resource and much more. We invite you to support our conservation efforts, sign our petitions and join our letter-writing campaigns. When GWF speaks out on conservation issues, people listen. As a member of GWF, you will be heard.

Enjoy the Outdoors

GWF’s members include hunters, anglers, gardeners, birdwatchers and hikers - a diverse group of individuals united by our love for the great outdoors. GWF offers hunter safety courses, hunting and fishing trips, nature studies, educational field trips, bird counts and countless other activities geared toward outdoor enthusiasts. Sportsmen and women in particular will enjoy our four annual tradeshows - the Atlanta Hunting, Fishing and Outdoor Show®; the Perry Fisharama®/Turkeyrama®; the Atlanta Buckarama®; and the Perry Buckarama®.

Spread the Conservation Message

GWF is Georgia’s leader in environmental education. As a nationally recognized pioneer of the Schoolyard Wildlife Habitat program, GWF has helped develop more than 400 educational wildlife habitats at schools throughout the state. We also train Habitat Stewards and Adopt-A-Stream volunteers, sponsor workshops for environmental educators and respond to thousands of requests for information about wildlife each year. We educate people of all ages through our website (www.gwf.org) and our award-winning publications, such as The Flint River.

In 2000, GWF opened the Alcovy Conservation Center, which serves as our headquarters and a training ground for outdoor activists and educators. Teachers visit the center and surrounding gardens to gather ideas and resources to take back to their schools. Concerned citizens and community leaders meet at GWF’s home to collaborate and learn more about natural resource issues. The Alcovy Conservation Center allows GWF to deliver our conservation message more effectively to more people and helps us be the community service organization we were designed to be.

In addition to the training facilities at the Alcovy Conservation Center, we have 88 acres of protected stream and wetland areas at Mill Creek Nature Center in Buford that will provide educational and recreational opportunities for area visitors as well as important habitat for wildlife. The Wharton Conservation Center is located on a 129-acre tract of pristine Appalachian wilderness at the headwaters of the Tallulah River and is one of Georgia’s most ecologically significant places. GWF manages the tract to protect its special flora and fauna and their associated habitats while maintaining ecological integrity. The center is also used as an education and research station.
