In order to best manage a natural area, one must know the kinds of species that inhabit the area. Back in 2002-2003 (when GWF became owners of the MCNC), several GWF volunteers and staff walked the MCNC trails to survey the property for flora and fauna. The list from that time has since needed updating, especially for wildlife. Since 2005, we started conducting Bioblitzes, or species surveys. Visit http://web.uconn.edu/mnh/bioblitz/ to learn more about what a bioblitz is and how it began in Connecticut. At Mill Creek Nature Center, we conduct a modified Bioblitz, only surveying the property for one day and not overnight like the original Bioblitz. We invite local volunteers, University of Georgia graduate students and professors, state biologists, bird clubs, garden clubs, etc., to participate and lend their knowledge to our surveys. We are compiling a list of species we know inhabit our property so that we will be able to inform the general public about species they might be able to see while visiting MCNC as well as better manage our wetland ecosystem.
