Wharton Description

Wharton Conservation Center

The mission of the Wharton Conservation Center (WCC) is to honor the memory of Dr. Charles H. Wharton through  the permanent preservation of the land and the wildlife of the Tallulah River watershed and, where compatible with this goal, to facilitate the experiential education for all and support of long-term reserach into highlands habitats and deep ecology.

A panel is in place to advise both board and staff of GWF about the Wharton Conservation Center.  Panel members were selected to represent a variety of perspectives, viewpoints, and experience, including science, education, land conservation, advocacy, and knowledge of the land and its heritage and culture.  All panel members knew Dr. Wharton and have a strong desire to honor his legacy both at the WCC site and elsewhere.

Georgians for generations to come will benefit from, and have a deeper understanding of the Southern Highlands ecosystem as a result of Dr. Wharton's extraordinary vision and bold leadership.
